Getting Squeaky Clean Windows This Spring

Now that the winter months and stormy weather are (hopefully) behind us, it’s the perfect time to give your windows the TLC that they deserve. When the sun starts shining, you’ll quickly see the streaks of dirt, dust, and grime that have accumulated over the last few months. Letting the excess moisture and debris sit on your windows for too long could even cause damage to the inserts. Cleaning both the interior and exterior is a must to remove any excess build-up. With these tips and tricks, in combination with the right equipment, you’ll have squeaky clean windows in no time!

Tips for a Successful Cleaning

When to do it: Although it may seem like it’d make sense to do it on a bright sunny day so you can clearly see all the built up grime, it’s actually best to clean windows on a cloudy day. On hot sunny days, the water and cleaning solutions may dry to quickly, leading to streaks on the glass. Choose a mild, overcast day for best results.

Equipment You’ll Need: Using a squeegee is the most efficient way to get the job done. The Unger Pro Stainless Steel Squeegee will give you a streak-free look every time. Use it hands-free on smaller, easy to reach panels, or attach it to any one of the Unger poles to reach high up windows. Be sure to pull the squeegee down each pane in one single stroke from top to bottom. To avoid streaks, wipe the blade with a rag in between each stroke.

You’ll also need a good cleaning chemical to use. The Claire Gleme Glass Cleaner will clean and polish your windows, without running, dripping, or streaking. You won’t have to worry about it leaving a film behind; Just spray and wipe clean! The Stearns Window Cleaner is also a good choice, also leaving surfaces free of oils or smudges.

Screens: While you’re doing the interior and exterior of your windows, you might as well pop out the screens and clean those too! Most screens can easily be removed to make it easier for you. Scrub them with a non-abrasive brush and household cleaner, and finish by hosing them down. The Unger Original Stripwasher & Sleeves can also be used, as they’re gentle but strong. Be sure to let them dry completely before putting them back in!
